Overview of Courses

The Centre for Online Sanskrit Studies offers online classes that enable the systematic learning of Sanskrit, highlight the spiritual significance of the Sanskrit language, enable greater understanding of Vedic chants and prayers, and provide support and guidance for the Cambridge International Sanskrit Exams.

Online classes that enable the systematic learning of Sanskrit

The courses are run by a fellowship of people who have the love of Sanskrit and its practical application in deepening the understanding of an original language of many scriptures.

The courses have been designed in simple language for easy comprehension. It is based on material prepared mainly by St James School-Sanskrit Department, London.

Pre-requisites

There are no pre-requisites for enrolling for the Introductory course – just a desire and willingness to learn Sanskrita.

Eligibility

Only those residing in South Africa may join. Overseas students will be referred to the St James School-Sanskrit Department for their online Sanskrita classes.

Courses

The courses comprise of four levels as follows:

Beginners

The Beginners course is to give participants a glimpse into the glory of the Sanskrit language. The course starts with an introduction to the Sanskrit alphabet with its unique grouping in different families based upon mouth positions and articulations. Emphasis is laid on the sounding and writing of the alphabet.

Intermediate

The Intermediate course is spread over several terms. The reading skills of the student will be developed. The grammar of the Sanskrit language will now be introduced. The buildup of the student’s vocabulary also commences as well as an introduction to nouns, adjectives, and verbs.

Higher Level

The Higher Level - Cambridge International Sanskrit IGCSE is presented over a period of 2 to 3 years. The course inspires learners to develop their understanding of the language, as well as develop translation skills and an appreciation of Sanskrit literature.

Advanced

Through the Advanced Level (Post IGCSE Examination) the learners are exposed to various Sanskrit scriptures such as the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gītā, Laws of Manu, etc.  In translating passages, a lot of knowledge is gained, depth of the language is experienced and the beauty thereof is enjoyed.

How the Courses Work

The courses are conducted online via Zoom.

There will be three terms in a year, starting in January, May and September. Each term runs for 10 weeks.

Classes are held once a week. The duration of each class will be ninety minutes with a short break in between.

Textbooks will be prescribed which will greatly enhance the learning of the language.

In order to embed the lessons homework will be given (about 1 hour per week).
