Intermediate Level Courses

At the Intermediate Level, the focus is on Sanskrit reading skills, grammar and vocabulary. The student will develop all-important reading skills, and the grammar of the Sanskrit language will be introduced, and the student will also begin to develop a vocabulary.

This level is spread over several terms.

The course comprises an introduction to nouns, adjectives, and verbs, and the six ways in which a noun is related to a verb. Each relationship is introduced in an easy-to-understand manner:

  • The influence of gender differentiation (male, female and neuter) of the noun.
  • The concept of singular, dual and plural and its effect on nouns and verbs.
  • The three times - past, present and future and their relation with verbs.

Reading and reciting verses in Sanskrit will be an important aspect of the course.

The enigma of the Sanskrit language will slowly unravel.

Course Content

The following topics/concepts are covered at this level:

  • Focus is on Sanskrit reading skills, grammar and vocabulary.
  • The noun, adjective and verb will be studied, and each concept is shown to be related to each other, and also to its universality.
  • A noun can be categorised in six ways (declension).
  • How to address a person with reverence.
  • Adjectives and their relationship with the noun.
  • The effect of the three genders on the noun.
  • The different forms of a verb in relation to time - the past, present and future tenses.
  • Numbers - singular, dual and plural - and its effect on the nouns and verbs.
  • The First Person, Middle Person and Best Person and its effect on the verb.
  • Verbs as a gerund.
  • Verbs as a 'Command'.
  • Reading of stories.
  • Recital of verses.
  • Expanding vocabulary continues.

Outcomes

At the end of the course students will:

  • Be familiar with the grammar of Sanskrit.
  • Have improved on their Sanskrit reading skill.
  • Be able to recite simple Sanskrit verses.
  • Be familiar with Sanskrit universal prayers.
  • Be able to transliterate from Sanskrit Devanagari font to the italic Roman font.
